To clear up any confusion on the skill migration process, the following FAQ was written

Skill Migrator FAQ

What is it doing anyhow?

In a given thirty day period, you are allowed the quicker rate for the first sixty (60) training points you wish to untrain.  Crossing that threshold takes you into a secondary pool of twenty (20) training points that migrate at a significantly slower rate than the initial sixty, but still faster than the normal rate.  Once you have exceeded the total pool of points for the quicker rates, migration takes place at the normal rate.

The mechanics are such that small migrations of a few ranks in a given thirty day period are “relatively” quick and more dramatic changes or changes exceeding a few ranks in a thirty day period take significantly longer.  The number of ranks you can migrate at the quicker rates is dependant on how many training points the ranks cost.

(If there comes a time that our developers need to allow you to adapt your character to significant changes in the game design, we can accelerate the rates of migration and/or increase the pools of points between thresholds.)

Why do I see different time estimates from one time to the next?

The system currently calculates its estimates based on your current rate, which means if your rate changes either because you passed one of the threshold points or a new thirty day period started the time is recalculated at the new current rate.

We acknowledge that the hours-to-goal values may be reporting values that are far higher than what you will experience in practice.  This is due to the use of the current rate at any specific point in time.  If you have already converted your fast 60-80 TP for the month, you will be converting further TP at a slow rate, which would result in the hours-to-goal value being very high.  We are planning some changes to the display to be more representative of the actual playing time needed to achieve your goals.

One thing to keep in mind is that the hours-to-goal value is not exact.  There is no way for us to know if you will play 20 hours, 50 hours, or 100+ hours in the next month, which means that we don’t know how long you might spend at the fast rate of conversion and how long you might spend at the standard rate of conversion.  Thus, the value you see will simply be an estimate.

What does ASAP mean?

It means “As Soon As Possible,” or, as soon as you have training points available either from gaining new points due to gaining experience or gaining a training point back from reducing a skill via the skill migrator.

Why isn’t the migrator instantaneous?

The skill migrator was never meant to be a way to make dramatic changes to your character from one day to the next.  Rather, it was meant to provide you with a way to tweak and fix your character’s training.  It also allows the developers to provide means for players to adapt when significant changes are made that invalidate a previously viable training path or significantly change the way a given training path is “played.”

Why are you using online time rather than “real” time?

The migrator system empowers you to correct minor flaws in your past training.  It is not meant to allow you to make dramatic changes to your character, such as going from a lockpicker to an enchanter by setting some goals and logging out for six months.

If you want your character to be a lockpicker, then you should train to be a lockpicker.  If your character is currently a lockpicker, but you really wanted to be an enchanter and you have exceeded the initial grace periods for migration, then you are going to have to commit yourself to migrating your skills at the normal rate.

What if my character is unviable because I am migrating 160 ranks in edged weapons to 160 ranks in ranged weapons?

Unfortunately, you are trying to use the system in a manner contrary to its intended purpose.  Consequently, it is not going to be easy to do and it is going to require a lot of time and sacrifice on your part.

Before GemStone IV’s release, the only way you could change your ranks was by rerolling your character.

Finally, we plan to provide limited availability to items, events, and/or rewards that can grant a player the ability to instantly convert once.  We will provide more details at a later time.
