Roleplaying Tip for 03/25/04

Is your character cultured?

Each race within GemStone IV can be separated further into several cultural groups.  A character’s culture can be just as important as their race.  For many of the races, the individual cultures can be dramatically different from each other, so deciding which one is best for your character can be very important.  Most characters would be heavily influenced by the culture they grew up in, even if they have since left it all behind.

For some characters, not choosing a culture will say a lot about them as well.  Maybe your character grew up in a family away from any cultural centers, or maybe had no regular family at all.  If your character was not heavily influenced by a specific culture, leaving it blank will tell more about him or her than you might at first think.

If you want to choose a culture for your character to help develop him or her further, but haven’t yet, the GemStone website provides a lot of information.  You can either choose a culture that seems to best fit an already established character, or pick a culture first and then build a character around it.

Some people like their characters to be a prime example of what they think someone from that culture would be like.  Others like to go against their chosen culture.  If you choose to go against the culture, it really only works well if you do your homework so that you understand the culture, and then develop reasons for why your character is different than the norm.
