The Revel of the Anfelt
Using the Runestaff Lathe
The runestaff lathe is used
to generate long description alterations for runestaves, based upon a set of
parameters generated by the machine.
These long descriptions are not those created free-form by the user, but
by selecting from the options given by the lathe itself.
Runestaves may be altered in
color, shape and decoration. It is
possible to select not to use any or all of these options, so one may have a
plain runestaff, with just the wood to distinguish it. Runestaves made of a material that the lathe
does not recognize will have “wood” as its material.
The lathe can be accessed
through the fissure in Twisted Runestaves or down the corridor in Stave
Yourself, and then by going north.
[A Cul-De-Sac]
The corridor ends abruptly, blocked by a solid wall of splintered supports, earth, and rocks. Torches line the walls and a haze of oily smoke has gathered overhead. Inroads have been made on the blockage with some sections swept clean enough to accommodate an elaborate runestaff lathe. You also see an oak-framed sign.
Obvious exits: south
You tap an elaborate runestaff lathe.
>look lathe
The lathe is a conglomeration of complicated-looking gears and mechanisms. Several items in particular stand out on the lathe, and look as if you could manipulate them: a button, a wheel, a knob, a dial, and a lever. A sign hanging on the lathe reads:
"This lathe will work on runestaves only."
>read sign
In the Common language, it reads:
PULL lever for shapes.
TURN wheel for colors.
SPIN knob for themes.
FLIP dial for style.
PUSH button to see your finished runestaff.
PUSH button again to lathe your runestaff into its new shape.
Please make sure your runestaff looks how you want it before you push the button the second time and commit your changes.
Cost is 10k silvers, and must be in coins.
Shapes
>pull lever
You pull the lever. A series of clicking and clacking sounds sputter forth from the lathe. It's now set to <selection> shape.

Themes
Themes work differently from Colors and Shapes. Rather than choosing a specific alteration, it will open up a set of choices, designated by Styles. For example, choosing the “Fauna” theme allows one to choose from a specific set of Styles, while “Figurine” will allow another set of Styles to choose from.
>spin knob
You casually spin the bulky silver knob to the next theme. Peering at the little window above the knob, you see that the theme is now "<selection>"

Styles
Styles are organized by the Theme that they fall under. Set the Theme first to open the menu of selections, then set the Style to the desired setting.
>flip dial
You flip the dial to the next selection. A strange whirring sound emanates from the lathe. You see that the dial is now set to "<selection>".
