New characters that have exited the character manager will be able to go on what is called the “Sprite Quests.” During the sprite quests, a sprite will approach the character and, if the character accepts by NODding to the sprite, lead the character on a series of small adventures. These quests are only available to new characters, not characters that have returned to the game after an extended absence.
Over the course of the quests, the sprite will provide information to the character of the basic mechanics and roleplay that form the foundation of the game. In this way, the new player will have an understanding which will allow them to find their footing in the game, so to speak. Sprites will also instruct the new player on some ways to use their particular front end, be it the Wizard or StormFront.
Many quests offer choices allow the new character to make a decision as to which path to take. He can decide whether to help a town official or side with a criminal element. Such choices will lead to a different outcome in the quest and will allow the player to build a roleplaying concept of the character they’re playing. The choices may also end up with different rewards for the character at the end of that specific adventure.
By the end of the sprite quests, the character should have enough experience to get to level 1. The character may also choose to TELL SPRITE TO SLEEP and visit all the locations listed under the DIR command. Visiting all the locations given by DIR will also provide a good amount of experience, often enough to get to level 1. After getting to level 1, the character may then TELL SPRITE TO WAKE and continue on the sprite quests as normal, acquiring experience from the sprite quests as if they had been taken at level 0. If in Icemule or the Landing, the character may also listen to the Raging Thrak or Trevor Dabbings and still gain experience from doing so, even if the character had taken the sprite quests.
A character with a sprite will show as having the sprite on their shoulder if LOOKed at. Those who cast defensive spells on the character with a sprite, and possibly take other actions to help them, may receive a message of feeling good about helping those less fortunate. Doing so will give the character helping the new character a deed. Deeds can only be gained in such a manner once for each character helped.
